Wheelin' Jazz Successfully Defend Championship

The Neuroworx Wheelin' Jazz successfully defended their Best of the West Shootout championship in a thrilling 61-57 win over the #7 LA Lakers. Jeff Griffin was named MVP of the tournament averaging 22.8 points. The win closes out the 2008-09 season for the Wheelin' Jazz with a record of 13-3.

After just losing in the semi final to Utah, the Lakers came out on a mission, pushing the ball up the floor scoring in transition. They caught the Wheelin' Jazz off guard and pushed out to a 10 point lead before the Wheelin' Jazz could cut the lead to 38-32 at the half.

Halftime was about adjustments for the Wheelin' Jazz. The second half started with a flurry as Utah scored the first 12 points of the half and a run of 16-2 to take a 48-40 lead midway through the half. The Lakers then went on a 10-2 run and tied the score at 50. From there, the Wheelin' Jazz retook the lead and hit their free throws to ice the game.

Tournament MVP Jeff Griffin and Bret Remington both had strong outings scoring 22 and 12 points respectively. Layne Mangum added 9 while Rod Niemann scored 8. The Lakers were led by William Arriaga and Edward Perdano with 18 and 13 points.

Next up is the National Tournament with the Regional scheduled for Feb 28 and March 1.
