Wheelin' Jazz Open Desert Classic with Win over the Suns

January 4, 2009

The #6 Utah Wheein' Jazz opened the 2009 Desert Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Las Vegas, NV with a hard fought win over #19 Phoenix Suns. The Wheelin' Jazz found themselves trailing throughout the first half and much of the second half before rallying for the 58-56 win.

The Suns were able to use their smaller lineup to speed up the game and press the taller Wheelin' Jazz. The Wheelin' Jazz countered with strong inside play from Jeff Griffin, Bret Remington, and Layne Mangum to overcome the smaller Suns.

Jeff Griffin led three players in double figures with 22 points followed by Rod Niemann with 14, and Bret Remington with 11.

The Wheelin' Jazz will next face the #7 LA Fast Breakin' Lakers later in the afternoon
