Wheelin' Jazz win Defensive Battle; Advance to 2nd Straight Final Four

The Neuroworx Wheelin' Jazz successfully defended their West Regional Championship with a hard fought victory over the #4 Golden State Road Warriors 54-48. The win puts the Wheelin' Jazz in the NWBA Final Four for the 2nd straight year.

The game was a defensive battle from the beginning with neither team wanting to give an inch. Golden State jumped out early and lead 16-8 midway through the 1st half. Utah chipped away at the lead but trailed by 3 at the half, 26-23.

The Wheelin' Jazz made some defensive adjustments to start the second half and a Bret Remington basket with 12:36 to go gave the Wheelin' Jazz their first lead of the game at 36-34. That basket started a 12-6 run that put the Wheelin' Jazz ahead 48-40 with just over four minutes to go.

Golden State ran off 6 straight points to trim the lead to 48-46. After a timeout, Bret Remington and Mike Schlappi ran the pick-and-roll to perfection ending in a layup that ended the Golden State run. From there, the Wheelin' Jazz tightened up the defense and hit their free throws to seal the win.

Regional MVP Jeff Griffin led all scoring with 19 followed by Bret Remington with 10. Jason Hokanson and Layne Mangum added 8 points apiece, Rod Niemann 6, Mike Schlappi 3.

Golden State was lead by Trooper Johnson's 16, followed by Marcus Oden's 10. Chuck Gill followed with 8 but was held scoreless in the 2nd half.

Next up for the Wheelin' Jazz is the Final Four in Denver, CO March 19-21.
